Who We Are - the "Heart" in Heartwood
Heartwood has been building log homes since 1984, when three experienced log builders, Michael Coyle, Roger Ellis and Rick McMahon, incorporated Heartwood Log Homes Ltd.
Since then, we have built dozens of log homes in Canada and the Eastern United States, from Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Today, Heartwood is fully owned by Roger Ellis, and the team includes Michael Coyle, Roger’s son Nathan Ellis, long time employee Dave Clark, and since 2010, Josh Dowell. Rick McMahon has gone on to form his own log home maintenance and restoration business. Check it out at www.rickmcmahon.ca.
To us, working with logs is a very "honest" way to build. When
logs are joined to form the walls of a house, there is no way to cheat on
quality. The initial selection of trees, the peeling of the bark, the scribing,
the cutting, and finally the cleaning and finishing of the logs; all these
things are important to the construction of a quality log home. All work
must be done with care and pride, for mistakes cannot be hidden under a layer
of gypsum board. This level of craftsmanship is a challenge that we can't
resist.
We continue to get rave reviews from the locals on our beautiful home .... Enjoyed having you guys here and we look forward to continuing our friendship with you over the years. — Hank and Carolyn O'H., Nova Scotia
The relationship established with our customers is another source of pride for us. We build for people who share our affinity for natural wood. Therefore, it is easy to work together on the design and construction of their homes. Friendships are often created along with the houses.
